Parking in Marchmont & The Grange: Zone S1

👮 Written by an experienced enforcement officer in Edinburgh· 2026 edition

Marchmont — tenement‑lined, student‑heavy, right on the edge of the Meadows — and the leafy Grange just to the south. Controlled weekday daytime; free in the evenings and at weekends.

📍 The short answer Marchmont & The Grange is Zone S1. Pay & display or permit applies Monday–Friday 8:30am–5:30pm only (about £4.20 an hour or less). It's free every evening after 5:30pm and all day Saturday and Sunday. Residents can hold a Zone S1 residents permit.

Marchmont & The Grange parking rules

Marchmont and the Grange sit in controlled parking Zone S1. During those controlled hours you must either pay at the machine or on the RingGo app, or display a valid Zone S1 residents permit. Like all of Edinburgh's S and peripheral zones, it runs Monday to Friday only and stops at 5:30pm — there's no weekend charging at all. Streets here include Marchmont Crescent, Arden Street, Lauderdale Street, Spottiswoode Street, Thirlestane Road, Strathearn Road and Blackford Road.

When is parking free in Marchmont & The Grange?

Zone S1 sits between the Meadows and Blackford, a dense residential area that's especially busy in university term time. Because it's free out of hours, the popular streets fill quickly, so you may need a couple of laps. And free bays never excuse a yellow line — double yellows apply 24/7.

🎓 Term-time crushMarchmont is packed with students, so weekday daytime spaces are genuinely hard to find in term. Evenings after 5:30pm and weekends are free and a little easier.

Free parking near Marchmont & The Grange

Streets further south toward Blackford and the Grange's quieter edges can be easier, but term-time daytime demand across the whole area is fierce. Our free parking guide and the map show exactly where the controlled zone ends.
