Edinburgh Castle is the busiest tourist spot in the city, and the streets around it are some of the most heavily enforced. Here's the honest, on-the-ground version of where you can actually park, what it'll cost, and the spots that'll earn you a ticket before you've even reached the esplanade.
The nearest car park: NCP Castle Terrace
This is the closest multi-storey to the Castle, about a 5-minute walk away (uphill on the way there, downhill on the way back โ your legs will thank you later). It's on Castle Terrace, postcode EH1 2EW, with around 750 spaces and it's open 24 hours a day.
It's not cheap โ the daily rate can run high, especially in summer โ but pre-booking through the NCP app almost always works out cheaper than turning up and paying the drive-in rate. If you're visiting during August or for the Tattoo, pre-booking the night before isn't just cheaper, it's the difference between having a space and circling the block.
Other car parks within walking distance
- Q-Park Omni Centre โ underground, near the top of Leith Street, about a 15-minute walk. Open 24/7, with a 2-metre height limit.
- NCP St John's Hill โ better for the lower (Holyrood) end of the Royal Mile, but a reasonable walk to the Castle and often a bit cheaper than Castle Terrace.
- Spittal Street Lane โ a small private car park near the Grassmarket. Good value, but only fits smaller vehicles โ anything bigger than a VW Golf will struggle at the entrance.
On-street parking near the Castle
If you'd rather park on the street, the closest options are in Zone 4, where pay & display runs at ยฃ6.80 an hour. Streets worth checking include:
- Johnston Terrace โ winds right below the Castle, but spaces are limited and snapped up quickly
- King's Stables Road โ on the west side, just below the Castle rock
- Castle Terrace โ the street as well as the car park, though bays are few
Always pay through RingGo or at the machine, and check the location code on the sign โ it's different for each street, and paying for the wrong one is treated the same as not paying at all.
What to never do
- Don't stop on Princes Street โ it's double yellow lines and loading restrictions the entire length, 24/7. Instant ticket, any time of day.
- Don't park on the single or double yellows around the Old Town without checking โ many also have loading restrictions (kerb tick marks) where even a quick stop earns a ticket with no grace period.
- Don't risk the Royal Mile โ it's effectively off-limits to parking, and it's one of the most patrolled streets in Scotland.
The honest best option
For most visitors, the lowest-stress plan is simple: pre-book NCP Castle Terrace if you're set on driving, or โ even better โ use a Park & Ride on the edge of the city and take the tram or bus in. You skip the traffic, skip the hunt for a space, and it usually costs less too.
