Parking during the Edinburgh Festival & Fringe

๐Ÿ‘ฎ Written by an experienced enforcement officer in Edinburghยท 2026 edition

Every August, Edinburgh becomes the busiest city in the country. The Fringe, the International Festival, the Military Tattoo and more all run across the month, and parking near the venues is the hardest it gets all year. Here's how to handle it without a ticket or a tow.

๐ŸŽญ The short versionDuring August, expect packed streets, suspended bays near venues, and central zones charging every day. For most visits the answer is simple: don't drive to the venues. Use a Park & Ride with the tram or bus, or book a car park in advance.

When is the Edinburgh Festival in 2026?

"The Festival" is really several festivals overlapping across August. The busiest stretch is the middle-to-late weeks, when most events run at once.

Why parking is so hard in August

Hundreds of thousands of extra visitors arrive, and the venues cluster in the places that are already hardest to park: the Old Town and Royal Mile, the Southside around the Pleasance and Summerhall, and the New Town. Add the evening Tattoo crowds heading to the Castle, and the centre is gridlocked from late morning to late evening.

โš ๏ธ The suspended-bay trapFor events and processions the council suspends parking bays โ€” they go up with cones and temporary signs. Parking on a suspended bay gets you a ticket or a tow, even if you've paid at the machine. During the Festival, always read the signs on the bay before you leave the car.

The smart way to park during the Festival

Don't forget: central charges and the LEZ

Two things catch festival visitors out. First, the central zones charge every day, including Sunday afternoons โ€” "free Sundays" only applies to the outer zones. Second, the Low Emission Zone covers the city centre and runs 24/7: a non-compliant vehicle is fined just for driving in, festival or not.
